So funny! And so true! I always love the smell of dirty dishes when we've just feasted on garlicky pasta ...

I think garlic might indeed be the key.
I think in my case it was Tuesday night's dinner when I had marinated some grass fed, locally raised lamb riblets overnight in red wine vinegar, shallots, parsley, garlic, hot sauce, olive oil salt and pepper and maybe something else I can't recall now. I had first seared the outside of those riblets on the BBQ and then slow cooked them, covered, in the oven, for a couple of hours, in the left over marinade plus a cup of dry white wine. I think it must have that combination that that made my dishwasher smell so delicious.

I thought this was going to be a post on cooking food in your dishwasher.
Instead I'm slightly disgusted and yet hungry... :)

I've noticed the same thing! One of my favorite moments is when I come into the kitchen from upstairs or outside an hour or so after dinner and tbink, "man, it smells great in here. Whoever lives here sure is eating well . . . oh, wait, that's me!"

I wish this would happen to me! Unfortunately, our small NYC apartment doesn't have a dishwasher, so the only thing I smell if I leave dishes for the next day is the nasty-arse smell of old sauce/food mixed with soapy water. And then I'm depressed b/c I'd love to just press a button and the dishes be done, but instead it's dishpan hands again! It's not quite appetizing and actually puts me off eating. I can't wait for the day when we have a dishwasher!!
So, all of you, whenever you have a minute, give your dishwasher a hug and a kiss. Especially if it smells as nice nice! - amy @ http://www.weareneverfull.com

Sam--I'm getting pedantic only because the lovely cheesemaker uses musical terms as names for all her products, and her company is Andante, not Adante. Envy you the taste of that butter; it must be especially sweet now that it is spring.

Funny it never smells good in the dishwasher ... eek it actually reeks! I wish it smelled good actually then I'd be tempted to lick the plates clean!

i think i eat really well, but my dishwasher always smells like ass! maybe that a good thing, because it indicates what a varied and interesting diet i have? or maybe dishwashers are just supposed to smell like ass, and yours was an aberration.

You crack me up! I thought you were talking about that nasty, dirty dish rags smell that you sometimes get from not-so-clean wine glasses. So glad you weren't.
