Bon Anniversaire & Joyeux Jour de la Bastille!

Happy Birthday Fred. (excusez mon pauvre Francais)
Archive Alert! On this day in 2004 we were in Paris, celebrating Fred's 40th Birthday. Summer lunch in the garden, a quiet dinner and then Parisian Fireworks.

Fred does not like dessert much, so instead of a birthday cake, I made him some gruyere gougere, this morning, for breakfast.

Tonight's celebration plan? Cafe Bastille, of course, where else? That will be followed by the 'soft' opening of a brand new French-run club in SoMa called The Duplex. Fred is in charge of what we do tonight, more than that, I do not know, I'll just follow...

  8. The gougeres look beautiful. Happy Fete Nationale and Birthdays all around.

The only place that I'm aware of, serving gougere in SF is Tartine, but theirs are so bloated they look like tumors. Judging by the scale of the oven rack, yours look perfect.

Cafe Bastille! You could I not mention it by name in my SFist post! I'm beating myself for it.

  14. Thanks everyone for all the comments and good wishes for Fred. Stephanie - I don't think this was the best ever recipe (from the cordon bleu recipe book) for gougere. Last year's was better, but it was in French and from the internet - I will see if Fred can find it again.
Ced - I hope you are black and blue!
We had a great time last night and so now I am late for work. Must dash...

  15. Thanks Sam (and Fred). I took German for seven years, and haven't even an elementary understanding of French, so I'll rely on you.
