Are you going to vote YES on Prop2? I don't have the power to vote in the US, so my opinion on the subject is somewhat moot. However, I would like to assure everyone who will be voting YES in 12 days time, that you don't need to worry about me. I have been purchasing only pasture-raised eggs, like the ones shown above from Eatwell Farm, for several years now. I like to think of it as voting with my wallet. If you are going to vote YES on prop 2 perhaps you should be voting with your wallet too. Please don't wait the years it will take for the legislation to come into effect, to show the industry how you feel about this issue now. Let your money do the talking by supporting those farmers who are already committed to raising their animals in a cruelty-free environment. If you don't, your action on polling day might just look a little
like all mouth and no trousers. I'm just saying.

Breakfast Day 23
Wheat porridge made from wheat berries [source: Eatwell], Sage Honey [source: Marshall's], Plain Yogurt [source: St Benoit], From the freezer - Stewed fruit: Pears [source: Cookiecrumb's garden], Blackberries [source: Swanton], Lemon Zest [source: not recorded], St George Pear Eau de Vie [source: St George] Salt

Lunch Day 23
Bread made with home ground whole wheat flour and a boiled egg [source: Eatwell], Butter [source: Straus], Bresaola [source: Fatted Calf], Salt & Pepper

Snacks Day 23
Cavatina cheese [source: Andante] and cucumber [source: Happy Quail],

Dinner Day 23
Tomato Salad & Courgette Fritters (a fritter experiment that looked good but tasted bland): pullet eggs, breadcrumbs from homemade loaf [source: Eatwell], Heirloom tomato, parsley [source: Mariquita], Basil [source: Four Sisters], mint [source: Marin Roots], Pecorino cheese [source: Andante], fantastic fresh crush unfiltered 'Sevillano Fall' Olive Oil [source: Sciabica's], whole wheat flour [source: Full Belly Farm], Olive Oil [source: Bariani], and Bacon [source: Fatted Calf] plus 'Heavenly Honey Ice Cream' made with Milk & Cream [source: Straus] and Sage Honey [Source: Marshall's] Salt & Pepper.

Drinks Day 23
Tap Water, Calistoga Sparkling Water, Tea (1 Cup) A Business Meeting at Starbucks forced me to select something from their menu, so I opted to try their new Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate. It didn't really live up to its name. The salted caramel aspect was lame. May have to try a more local version at home.

  1. I already voted. I dropped my *yes* in the box!

  2. I am voting yes, but with a bit of hesitance...I am 100% against animal cruetly, but I figure the big egg producers will just leave CA (taking away their jobs, instead of changing their practices)and continue on elsewhere, which makes me sad.

  3. I definitely support voting "yes" with my pocketbook, but after reading a fair amount on this, including from a number of small, responsible producers, I cannot support this legislation as written at the ballot box. It will have little impact on big egg producers other than to kill jobs, as rachael suggests and has the potential to drive smaller ones out of business.

  4. jek, would it be possible for you to share some of the information from responsible producers you've been able to find? Other than comments from Nigel at Eatwell (who supports prop 2), I've not found much from this group.

  5. Hi garys.

Producers I use for eggs are:

    1) Eatwell
    2) Marin Sun Farms
    3) Soul Food (via Prather)
    4) Happy Quail
    5) Marin Roots

some of these have eggs more often than others
sorry I don't have time to put links in right now but you should be able to google them for more info

    good luck

  7. what's more important - animal torture or loss of jobs in the egg industry?

  8. Im only allowed to vote with my dollars too, but I totally agree with you. Its time for us to start treating animals properly. I try not to be too political but this and prop 8 make me feel like I just cant wait to get my vote. I need to get the green card first though, so its a long road!

  9. This is partially a comment and partially a response to jek and rachael. I wholly support Prop 2, and believe the only way to vote is YES. As a disclosure, I've also volunteered for it the whole way through, so I know it thoroughly.

The Prop is written specifically to target factory farms, and support small farms. Factory farms are the large majority of the gross abusers in the food system. Small farms don't practice that kind of abuse; therefore this Prop won't harm them.

As to the concerns about egg producers leaving CA? Highly unlikely. A) Mexico doesn't have enough feed corn to support a factory farm operation of the type that we have here and B) Similar legislation was passed in Arizona a few years ago, and after it passed, not only did the big producers not leave, but they voluntarily adopted the standards before they needed to. It was a huge catalyst for change in the industry. Saying that the farms are going to leave if this passes is just a scare tactic.

For further reference on these myths, I highly encourage you to visit www.yesonprop2.com. Actually, I encourage everyone to visit the website. It is very informative, and, also, in the list of endorsements, you'll find Eatwell farm (among many other local, sustainable farms), the very same farm where Ms. Posh Nosh gets her eggs.

  10. I will also add that Dan Summers, author of an anti-Prop 2 report, is the source who said it was unlikely that egg production would move to Mexico. The quote can be found on the website, as well.

  11. Sam, I like your market driven approach to change. And to be quite honest, after eating eggs from Eatwell and Marin Sun Farm, our family will never go back. So my suggestion is to vote with your taste buds. You will not only be helping your local farms but enjoying the best egg I have ever consumed.
