Monday's post about what I really ate last week attracted a fair amount of attention. A comment from McCauliflower over at Brownie Points reminded me of Tucker Shaw who wrote a book called Everything I Ate. Then Yoony at Immaeatchu followed posted a list of everything she ate last week too. (It fascinates me how different our diets are.) One of her readers, The Epicurious Wanderer, Chubby Panda responded "Little mini-pictures of the food would have topped it off nicely". Chubby Panda had a good point - my post would have been much better with pictures.
So I hereby commit, starting from the moment I wake up on Monday November 20th, to the minute I go to bed on Sunday 26th November 2006, to take a picture of everything I consume (excluding black tea and water which I drink all day long and does not photograph well!) Will you join me? I think it will be a fascinating excercise, especially to be able to compare America indulging in Thanksgiving whilst others are not.
So who else is in? We'll aim to post up our pictures on our blogs on Monday 27th November. If you send me your details I will round up all (if I get any) entries thereafter. I will leave it up to you to decide how to best present all those photos. Could be fun - and no cheating now! You have to photograph EVERYTHING.

PS If you also want to see how Thanksgiving affects your weight, weigh yourself first thing on Monday morning and then again exactly the same time one week later, to see if any damage was done. Reporting on this aspect is by no means obligatory!
Sounds like a fun challenge. I pretty much have the camera with me at all times anyway, and my family already thinks I am nuts. (Better get the fridge stocked up with non-embarassing foods...)
ReplyDeleteI'm in. Although I embarked on this challenge already. Following your lead in Monday's post, I've been keeping track of what I'm eating this week, and photographing most everything. I'm keeping my post in draft until Sunday, when I'll link back here.
ReplyDeleteHappy Eating!
I think I'll hit this one. It will be an excuse to learn to make a nice collage with all my mini photos.
ReplyDeleteIt's gonna be sad when people see my hyper budget meals or how often I skip meals due to work.
Count me in! It will be a great excuse to practice my food photography. It will be a bit difficult to explain to my family, but hey, they have to love me even if they think I am horribly bizarre.
ReplyDeleteI'm in. The last time I did any sort of public food logging, it really affected some huge changes in the way I eat (and led to my participation in the Eat Local Challenge) and I think it's time to check in on that again.
ReplyDeleteWithholding a decision...
ReplyDeleteI mean, sometimes it's gummy bears and a glass of wine. Too embarassing.
But if you'll tell me how you make that cool photo collage, then maybe. (Darn, I hope it's not Picasa, which doesn't speak Mac.)
Considering how often I eat in places too dark to photograph (my that sounded weird, but I think you understand) I will pass...but I am super excited to see all the other results~!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll bite too. But does this mean that EVERYTHING I taste for Thanksgiving dinner--meaning tasting food for seasoning, etc.--needs to be photographed and chronicled? If the answer is yes, I guess it will help keep my "tasting" down to a minimum!
ReplyDeleteI would be interested in AMOUNTS as well, expressed in grams, universally for the planet to see. I am in! How do you do the collage?, of wait, I will ask my techie husband.
ReplyDeletehey! sounds fantastic but sorry im completely computer retarded. how do you make a collage?
ReplyDeleteThis guy did it for a year!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2006390100,00.html
Excuse the link to The Sun, it was the only one I could find.
I'll try. Do I have to photograph each glass of wine individually?
ReplyDeleteI am totally in. I'm flying out to D.C. to spend Thanksgiving with my brother, so I'll be sure to bring my camera wherever we go!
ReplyDeleteTalk about watching what you eat. I wish I had a better camera to join in. Now when I try to take pictures of food and wine and other things for my blog, it's always a mess. (This is really just an excuse, cause I know it will be more excessive than I'd like)
ReplyDeleteYou are hardcore chicky!! I couldn't do that :D
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that some of you are going to take part in this challenge. I am not sure it is going to be easy for me. But I will try. to answer some of the questions raised:
ReplyDeleteone food guy - excited to hear you are already on your way with this
garret - it wont be sad - i thinkthat is what interesting - we all have food blogs and present a food image to the outside worl - but what do we REALLY eat!
ANdrew - i am happy to have a Brit perspective, especially you
AMy - i am sure our families all love us because we are bizarre. I am trying to persuade mine to join in.
Jenn - woohoo - I think you are right it is a great way to question what we eat.
cookie - gummy bears paired with wine is EXACTLY the kind of thing we DO want to see, I LOVE gummy bears. I am sorry the answer is Picasa, not mac friendly but look what I found for you to play with, toys!
Another option would be to use a slide show like slide.com
Rachael - i do understand - i will be in vegas during this challenge so i am not sure quite how I am going to cope with that.
Jennifer - it is up to you - but - I was thinking if you are tasting something savoury as you cook you probably dont need to include it, but if you make something sweet and you lick the bowl and the spoon, then maybe you should!
Shelly - I hope you are going to explain NaBloPoMoin the process.
palette - see the comments to cookiecrumb for presentation ideas and softwares to use. The oz thing is interesting. I have that in my food diary maybe i will inlcude it. I weigh my cheese by the half oz.
coloured light - you need software called Picasa but it doesnt work on a mac so I am not sure what mac users use - look at the links i left in cookiecrumbs comment above and you should be able to find something you can use. it doesnt have to be a collage. I think I am going to do a different set of pictures for each day.
monkry gland - we all secretly read the sun you know, we just dont admit it publicly.
sean. Yes.
julianne - will your brother think you wierd, do you think?
farley - you can just enjoys everyone else's excessive obsessiveness, along with wheresmymind.
good luck everyone!
I would completely be in... except the fact that I'm travelling... and you know, I don't think anyone wants to see photos of airplane food ;-)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to what everyone else comes up with!
ooooo -is this a triple dog dare?
ReplyDeletesounds like fun- and sounds like the family will think I'm crazy...
Hmmm...we're not actually doing Thanksgiving; we have a two-days-after dinner, but I will certainly try!
ReplyDeleteSam.
ReplyDeleteYou amaze me! I know that if I did this, I'd lose weight (or cheat!). I can't weight to see the results. Best wishes!
-Shane.
Sam Beccy has been downloading Pacasa but I won't be able to with my Macso what will work for me. I see Cookiecrumb also has a mac. I will not be here after the Sat as I am off to Spain. So maybe its not a good idea for me to try this but I would quite like to.
ReplyDeletel - I am travelling too - and actually - I think airplane food is fascinating. So don't think we wouldn't be interested if you change your mind.
ReplyDeletemcauliflower - as many dares as you dare! All our families love our quirkinesses, right?
stephanie - I will not be having thanksgiving dinner either which is part of the project. Why wont I behaving it is part of my week food story. So don't let a little factor like that get in your way.
Shane - I am going to try not to cheat but there are a couple of restaurants I am visitng in Vegas I hope allow me to photograph my food.
mum - you could look at the flickR toys - I havent checked them out myself yet but have meaning to. Anyone know if there are any of these kind of utilities available for mac users.
I'm terribly behind in blogging these days, but what the heck! I'm in.
ReplyDeleteReally, this could be a great deterrent to mindless munching.
What a fun idea Sam. Not able to do it though I am afraid as I am going to be traveling, and have no idea what it will be like where I am heading to! Could try....
ReplyDeletePicasa is Mac friendly... My husband hosts all our pictures on Picasa and we use Macs... Just a heads-up :)
ReplyDeleteI dare to be heinie, so heaven help me, I guess I dare to accept this challenge too, using flickr's mosaic option. it's always good for me to try to figure out how to use this here computer as something more than a typewriter!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm in. Although my blog is in Dutch, pictures are universal heh! And it's California anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck... most of my friends think I'm nuts for photographing food anyway... count me in. this could be fun!
ReplyDeleteFound your blog quite by chance early today (Monday morning Australian time) just in the nick of time for the challenge! I LOVE this idea and I'm definitely in.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could participate, but I'm off to a 4-day workshop in Denmark this week and although I wouldn't mind taking pictures of the food in the airport, I don't really want to explain to my fellow conference attendees why I take pictures of the smorgasbord :)
ReplyDeleteI will take pictures of the food I consume with Zarah Maria of Food & Thoughts thou!
I'm in.
ReplyDeleteIt's only 10:00 Monday morning, and I am already startled and humbled to realize how very different what I really eat is from my blogging world.
Not that I didn't KNOW what I was eating--I guess I just have a feeling that if you eat someting but don't blog about it, there's a sense in which you haven't REALLY eaten it.
ReplyDeleteOh, what to do, I never post pictures! I read this too late anyway, but great idea, I´m very curious.
ReplyDeleteDamn damn DAMN! I only read this now (Monday lunchtime), so I've already skipped photographing 2 meals :-( Maybe a written record will have to do for now... if I can take the public scrutiny!
ReplyDeleteI'm in! I've been photographing everything since Monday morning. I missed lunch today though. I wrote it all down though! Gads this is tougher than I thought! Doesn't help that I've been flying all day.
ReplyDeleteI wish I hadn't read this late! I love photographing my food.
ReplyDeleteif you have only just found out about - please do feel free to take part still - either starting now for a week, or just for the rest of the week!
ReplyDeleteHi Sam and all,
ReplyDeleteI've just started keeping a running log on Flickr -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/elisebauer/sets/72157594387734059/.
Interesting exercise. So far I have not eaten many things (like the oreos my dad was using to make grasshopper pie this morning) because I didn't want to then have to report about it. Also, the thought of running upstairs to get my camera will deter me from mindless snacking. I'm also noting that we eat pretty darn well around here. :-)
wow! sounds like a tough challenge! i'll try it out. =) i am curious to see if anyone else's eating habits are as strange as mine.
ReplyDeletesince i *did not dare* back in november i decided to revive this challenge as some kind of therapeutical new years resolution ... way to late, i know, but i still want to thank you for the great idea!
