Can you guess what these guys are doing?

(It does have something to do with food)

PS I don't think this question is too difficult.

Archive Alert! On the weekend just past, in 2004, we went on a Johnnie Walker Journey of Taste.

The guys in the picture are tending a lovo, where food is wrapped in leaves and cooked with coals under the ground. Makes for a delicious flavour! Hope there was fresh seafood involved :)

hmmmm, that was a quick game. I was going to guess that they were cooking a whole animal underground, like a lamb or a pig.

It might be some melanesien cooking, Kassawa, meat.... everything is wrapped in banana leaves and then cooked for a day in a hole filled with charcoals.
It is a real treat in New-Caledonia. I think is is called a bagna or something like that

    Kalua Pig, Kalua Pig!!

And they are unloading the what's called an Imu (or underground oven!!) in Hawaii.

In light of your recent trip to Fiji I would agree with Saffron - it is a Lovo. Hot rocks in the pit cook the food. The one I went to in Fiji was held at night, under palm trees the tables covered in linen light provided by silver candelabra. The Fijian waiters were dressed in bright silks. Quite spectacular.

I reckon they are loading a massive bong with the best 'erbs Fiji has to offer....

I vote for the bong, too.

Everyone - here is the answer

Saffron - good work - and so quick off the mark!

Farmgirl - the only whole animal under there was a fish, and it wasn't the same scale as a whole pig or anything exciting like that.

Jeanne - then you would have been right.

Fleur de Sel - sounds very similar to the Fijian lovo method pictured here.

Fatemeh no, no no. I havent ever been to Hawaii.

Barbara - sounds like you had a better time than we did!

Monkey Gland and Kevin. It's big news on the radioin Fiji if someoneone is caught with marijuana. They are much more into their Kava.
