I like siverbrow's comments. A friend of mine swore by a mix of lemon juice, honey, a painkiller, a couple of shots of whiskey topped up with hot water!
You know I can't actually drink the stuff. The mere smell of it makes me gag. I think I must have had a lemsip related accident as a child and blotted it out. It's a bummer, becuase everyone always raves about it. It's Ribena with Ibuprofen and Codiene for me! Sweet Surrender!
Kristen - i think it is because it is hot. hot liquid makes me feel better anytime, not just when I have a cold.
amanda - you too? i am sorry. get better soon. I feel better today but i am all sniffly still.
silverbrow and tim - the whisky goes in without saying, no? But children read my blog so I had to be careful. And what if my colleagues from work were to read it? I also like to add ribena to it, but unfortunately ribena is harder to get hold of and more expensive than gold here. Conversely I hate the blackcurrant flavour lemsip. It has to be ribena in the lemon one.
mum - sounds like granny has it far worse than me. I need to know what she would like for her birthday.
Julia - yes - Vicks. Maybe I need to add that to my list to santa.
wmm - no - Whisky - it has to be scotch though i will accept Bushmills because we are more likely to have that in the cupboard.
lvanel - thanks - i am feeling better - but still rather attached to a large pile of tissues.
asmo - you've got it the wrong way round - you're meant to get your mum to send things to YOU! ;)
Jeanne - oh no! Maybe we caught it together last weeked? You can't buy them here. But I have a little stash if you need some. You can have the two remaining blackcurrant ones for free cos I really don't like those. But as other readers have pointed out you can mask the flavour with Scotch ;)
Maya - you bring butter through customs?????? Kerrygold can be easily bought here in the Bay Area, but I would kill to get me some really salty English butter. *sigh*
Cindy - but didn't that feel wierd - it having no drugs in it? I have to revisit that pllace. there's something about their tea leaf salad I like.
sean - this sounds good - but it involves a trip to the store. Unfortunately when you are off work sick, the store seems like it is a hundred million miles away from home. I'll have to get some ginger.
thank you tokyoastro girl and paz!
anon - i think the whisky is a recurring theme here.
del4yo - i actually painted the face on the mug and wondered if anyone would notice it.
thanks chubby, my sweet.
Monkeygland - you called me treacle! No one called me treacle before. That makes me feel all sticky inside. I do like to add ribena to my lemsip. And you have to drink it as hot as you can bear cos when it starts to cool then the potential gag factor increases.
Oh, what would life be without LemSip (or it's South African equivalent of MedLemon)? It's about the only medicine that gets used in our house - I particularly likes that it gives you that litle caffeine buzz - perfect for first thing in the morning sniffles ;-)
When I'm feeling sniffly and sorry for myself, Nick makes it for me with a shot of whisky and some honey. It almost makes being sick worthwhile! ;-)
hi im 38 and i was wondering if i can find lemsip in the united states. My mother got it when she was in Ireland, if I cant get it in the united states is there a website I can buy it from.

I love that stuff! Its so comforting.
ReplyDeletecan you send me some? (sniffle, sniffle)
ReplyDeleteTry adding a tsp of honey, a lug of fresh orange juice and most importantly a tot of rum or a dram of whisky. Turns Lemsip into a thing of wonder.
ReplyDeleteI think this may have been the first recipe I ever learned.

ReplyDeleteAh! Lemsip! I have to send the stuff to my mum in France and before living in the UK, I made sure I always had a stash - just in case.
ReplyDeletebrian needs some... i think he's got what you've got. can you get it in the US?
ReplyDeleteMy Irish husband loves the Lemsip. Me, I go for the Solpadeine. I lug boxes of that and bricks of Kerrygold Butter through Customs every year!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first tried the lemonade beer at Burma Superstar, the flavor reminded me of something that I couldn't quite place.
ReplyDeleteThen I figured it out: LEMSIP!
Feel better!
My fave home remedy is to steep a tea of discs of fresh ginger and sliced lemon until quite strong and mix with honey. Works every time, I tell ya.
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better soon:)
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better very soon!
ReplyDeletePaz
